Verified ReviewerAll they want is to get paid.
It was a stormy day, and a tree that was within 10 feet of the high voltage lines rubbed through the insulation. Sparks started flying and the house kept getting surged.
I called 911 because there wasn't an electric emergency line to call, only gas. More than three weeks have passed and I still haven't heard from them, so I had to call. They said that they never got a call and that this is the first time they're hearing about it.
I was with the firefighter when he called them and gave them the address. Unfortunately, you pay top dollar and get the worst service.
Preferred solution: An understanding of how customers don't get the service that they are forced to pay. Let's face it you can't get electricity anywhere else. And because of the negligence everytime it arks in the tree it seems something else in my house doesn't work
User's recommendation: Nothing you can do it's a monopoly

Verified ReviewerHorrible response time on power back on
A severe storm has knocked out the power. It's been out for over 18+ hours, which I find ridiculous.
Hire more people so that customers aren't inconvenienced for so long.
Nyseg is a poor excuse for a provider. I am very dissatisfied.

Verified ReviewerInappropriate Billing Practices and impossible jumps in power consumption
I am writing to file a formal complaint against New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) for their failure to accurately read my electric meter for ten months, followed by an improper and exorbitant billing of $1208.07. Below, I outline the details of my case and the actions taken by NYSEG that I believe are in violation of the new utility billing regulations.
Background For the past ten months, NYSEG has been billing me based on estimated readings, despite my meter being fully accessible in my front yard with no obstructions. During this period, I was on auto-pay and made regular payments based on their estimated charges. Recently, I received a bill for $1208.07 after NYSEG conducted an actual meter reading. Detailed Account of Issues Failure to Read Meter: NYSEG claimed they did not have access to read my meter, which is located in the front yard and is not obstructed in any way.
There were no legitimate reasons preventing them from performing the actual readings. Improper Estimated Billing: Over the ten-month period, NYSEG continued to issue estimated bills without making reasonable efforts to obtain actual meter readings. This practice contradicts the requirements set forth in the recent legislation. Exorbitant Final Bill: Upon finally reading the meter, NYSEG issued a bill for $1208.07, which they automatically withdrew from my checking account.
This amount reflects a sudden adjustment based on inaccurate estimates over the previous ten months, which seems impossible given my low electricity usage. I do not have an air conditioner and only use a few fans and lights. Lack of Transparency and Communication: NYSEG provided no prior notice or detailed breakdown of how the $1208.07 charge was calculated. Their customer service representatives have been unhelpful, stating that they are not obligated to read the meter if they choose not to, which is not aligned with the new laws intent.
Violations of the New Law The new law, effective January 2024, mandates the following: Limitation on Back Billing: Utilities cannot bill customers for gas or electricity if more than two months have passed without issuing a bill. NYSEGs sudden charge for ten months of usage in a single bill violates this provision.
Requirement for Actual Meter Readings: The law emphasizes the necessity of actual meter readings for billing, except under specific, statutorily accepted circumstances. NYSEG has failed to comply with this requirement.

They charge their customers way too much. They definitely don't care about their customers.
On a hot day they come after 11 asking to shut the power off for 2 plus hours. Seriously? Are you stupid? They don't even tell you they are coming.
Just show up. Terrible company.

Verified Reviewer | Newburgh, New York*** poor electric
Hey nyseg. How the *** is there 800 plus people without power in Tompkins county and you don't even show it?
But you will show the counties with one individual without power?
On top of the half *** job the contractors you brought in last week for the storm that kept us without power for three days? Paying customers deserve customer service.
User's recommendation: Go off the *** grid.
On a Saturday???

Verified ReviewerNo power for several days in July
Can you explain why, in July, with the power outage from July 15th to the late afternoon of July 18th, 2024, you not only performed the miraculous job of keeping the bill at the same cost, but you even managed to increase my bill by $20? When I had no power, no water, no internet, and lost $1000 worth of food from my freezers and refrigerator, all you do is impose more burden on people.
Great job, you criminals! Try to get someone to answer a phone to answer questions, you losers.
- No pros
- Lack of respect
- Lack humanity
- Cost
Preferred solution: Explanation, apologies, better practices, better personalities of NYSEG employees.

Verified Reviewer | Sherburne, New YorkTheir whole system needs to change
Decided last March to do budget billing and automatic payment as the price of electricity was volatile and we're on a tight budget. Everything was fine until January of this year.
I haven't had the same billing amount 2 months in a row. They didn't take the payment in February, and when I called they said I had a credit. Now, I somehow owe $511(monthly payment is normally $161). Last bill was $326 and the bill before that was only $120 (again, I supposedly had a credit) How can I have a credit when it's budget billing!?
Website is a mess and won't let me see prior bills. Customer service is no help and I keep getting different answers from different people. Hate that this company is my only option for electricity. Feels like a shell game and a sham.
Will be documenting meter reading for each month along with payments... This is ridiculous.
User's recommendation: I can't offer recommendations because if you live in their service area, then it's your only option.

Verified Reviewer | Buffalo, New YorkNo power@!!!!!!!!!!
Power has been off for over 6hrs and still nothing, when it was supposed to be back on 4hrs ago!!! This is ridiculous!
User's recommendation: NOT NYSEG
They keep underestimating my usage.
Pretty sure they have not read my meter since March of 24. I am on the budget billing.
I have been billed for less that I owe d/t their incompetence. I will now start reading and submitting my own meter reading, and send an accurate usage instead of being estimated. Also, I mailed my bill sending an additional $200 , they gave me a $200 dollar credit, but I still owe over $200 dollars on my balanced bill for August.
Their customer for over 32 years, never had this problem before. I called customer service, and now understand why things are so messed up.
45 min.can not you to turn on lect. On August 1
I would like to have Electric charge to me on AUGUST 01. The address is 22 Muckey road Binghamton ny 13903. My name Joseph Convertino my address is 361 first Avenue Vestal ny 13850 please me this not bin esay.
Billing
I was scheduled for a disconnect because I was three days late on a bill for $127. That is complete nonsense, especially when I have never been late or had any overdue bills. Way to go NYSEG!!!
